CHAPTER TWELVE
I spent the next few hours outside of the Branch, failing to comprehend Mateo Cardenas’s advice. If what happened to Claire Rochelle hadn’t been an accident, who would have attempted to murder her? Had she crossed the wrong people? Gotten wrapped up in illegal activity?
After monitoring Mason Mayberry, who waited until 11:00 PM before starting up his truck and leaving the library premises, I finally let Tofu and myself into the staff entrance and turned off the security system. I went over to my desk and pulled up the security camera program, so I could once more set up the footage to run in a loop.
The program wouldn’t accept my username and password.
I tried the same combination again, but the system didn’t recognize my credentials. In all likelihood, Olen had removed my rights to access the system. I wouldn’t log in again because doing so might lock this computer and inform the administrator. I suspected Ray Lei was the administrator, but Olen may have instructed him to negate my privileges, while also setting him up to receive notice if any computer in either of our facilities got locked out of the program.
I recalled that Olen might replay, or even watch any branch video feed in real time, to determine if I’d attempted to re-enter the building and stay the night, only to catch me in the act. This possibility put me on edge. Regardless, the security system would show that someone had entered the Branch late at night, but if I reset it now, Olen might think I left something in the building, returned for it, only to leave again. With such a slim space of time between entering and exiting, he might not bother checking the video feed. At least, I hoped so.
If I hoped to throw off any suspicion, I needed to reset the alarm and then run downstairs without allowing the cameras to pick up our images. Once I’d set the alarm, we’d have only thirty seconds before the alarm started counting down. We’d need to run down the steps, race through the meeting room, and enter the closet in that time span. On my own, I could accomplish the feat with a few seconds to spare, but with Tofu along for the journey…
I looked down at my dog. “We’ll have to run downstairs. Got it?”
Tofu chuffed as though telling me he could outpace me in a race.
“All right, let’s get this done.” I went over to the system, set the alarm, and then I led Tofu out of the staff workroom.
Tofu soon hurried past me, but since I needed to do my best to avoid getting my image picked up by the cameras once we left the workroom, I redirected him. Nevertheless, the camera in the corner of the wall opposite us would capture our images for less than two seconds before we crossed into the small meeting room, but since I had no other choice but to follow that path, we sped into the room.
